What is a Department of Exellence

Departments of Excellence are identified and funded by the MUR every five years as the best 180 departments in state universities. These are departments that stand out for the quality of their research and the quality of their development projects.

The department develops cutting-edge chemical research that includes the design and synthesis of new molecules applicable to materials, tools, and resources for quality of life, through teaching, research, and constant interaction with the business world and society.

The department's mission is to create a scientific culture in the field of chemistry through basic and applied research, in the knowledge that the understanding and promotion of these disciplines play a central role in sustainable and environmentally friendly development.

The strategic objective of the project is to consolidate the department's position of excellence at the national level in research and technology transfer in the field of new functional materials. This activity has implications for the energy sector, the reuse of waste and biomass, health, advanced electronics, and the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage.

Key strengths in achieving the project's goal of excellence are the transfer of the department to the new Navile science complex, the expansion of the necessary specialized staff, and the creation of a multidisciplinary research center in the field of advanced materials.
